Description

Boron nitride powder (also known as white graphite) is a high-performance advanced ceramic material prized for its unique combination of thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, and high-temperature lubricity. Unlike graphite, which is electrically conductive, boron nitride maintains excellent insulation properties while withstanding temperatures up to 900°C in air and over 2000°C in inert atmospheres.

Available in purities of 98% and 99%, our BN powder is suitable for applications ranging from cosmetic fillers to aerospace lubricants and thermally conductive electronic encapsulants.

Key Properties

High Thermal Conductivity – Boron nitride powder exhibits thermal conductivity comparable to some metals (30-50 W/m·K), making it an effective filler for heat management materials, while remaining electrically insulating.

Exceptional High-Temperature Stability – Unlike many lubricants that degrade above 300°C, boron nitride maintains its lubricating properties up to 900°C in oxidizing environments and well beyond in inert or reducing atmospheres.

Electrical Insulation – With volume resistivity exceeding 10¹⁴ Ω·cm, BN powder provides excellent dielectric properties, making it ideal for electronic packaging and insulation applications.

Chemical Inertness – Boron nitride resists attack by most chemicals, molten metals, and glasses. It is non-wetting and non-reactive, even at elevated temperatures.

Low Friction – The hexagonal crystal structure of h-BN gives it a low coefficient of friction, similar to graphite, but with the added benefit of electrical insulation and oxidation resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What is the difference between h-BN and c-BN?
A: Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has a layered structure similar to graphite, making it soft and lubricious. It's the most common form for powders. Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) has a diamond-like structure, is extremely hard, and is typically used in abrasive and cutting tool applications. Our standard BN1508 series is h-BN.

Q: What is the maximum operating temperature for boron nitride powder?
A: In oxidizing atmospheres (air), boron nitride is stable up to approximately 900°C. In inert atmospheres or vacuum, it can withstand temperatures exceeding 2000°C.

Q: Is boron nitride powder electrically conductive like graphite?
A: No. Despite being called "white graphite," boron nitride is an excellent electrical insulator, with resistivity >10¹⁴ Ω·cm.

Q: Can boron nitride be used in water-based systems?
A: Boron nitride is hydrophobic and not soluble in water. For water-based formulations, appropriate surfactants or dispersion aids are typically required.

Q: What particle sizes are available?
A: Our standard offerings include 3 µm (325 mesh) and 200 mesh. We can also supply custom sizes ranging from submicron to coarse grades based on your requirements.

Q: Is boron nitride safe for cosmetic use?
A: Yes. Boron nitride is widely used in cosmetics and personal care products. It is inert, non-toxic, and provides a smooth, silky feel in formulations.

Q: Do you offer samples for evaluation?
A: Yes, sample quantities are available for testing and evaluation. Please contact us with your requirements.
